Since you never really know who may hold a key to your new home, always have your locks rekeyed. Before you call to schedule this service, you will want to check out all the locks you have to be sure they look and work the way they should. If any look like they need repairs, make a note. Count up the total number of lock cylinders you have (the part you insert the key into) and have the total number ready when you call the locksmith. Rekeys are priced per cylinder, so the more accurate that number, the more accurate the quote. If you are mechanically inclined, those locks can be brought to our shop to save the cost of a service call.

We recommend having your locks rekeyed any time there are keys to your home or business potentially in the hands of someone who should not have them. This is certainly an err on the side of caution situation.

First, check the alignment by trying the key with the door open. If it is easy to turn, the problem is not the key or cylinder, it is the alignment. We can help adjust your strike plate to solve the problem. If the key is difficult to turn even with the door open, the issue is with either the key or the cylinder. Spraying a silicone based lubricant (we use Houdini) into the lock may fix the problem. Please do not use anything but a silicon based lubricant in your locks. If that doesn't solve the problem, it may be that the lock or pins have worn down over time, which is a common source of this problem. That's when it is time to call a locksmith to assess your hardware for repair or replacement. Whether it is repaired or replaced will depend on what they find when the hardware is disassembled.

We can! Mailbox locks typically can't be rekeyed, so they are generally drilled out and replaced.

Unfortunately, no. RI does not require locksmiths to hold a license which is, in part, why we have such a problem with scam locksmiths in this state. Typically a legitimate locksmith will have the next best thing which is a General Contractor's license. Our General Contractor's license number is GC-36969.

We often hear of problems with kiosk or hardware store keys not working. The simple fact is, locksmiths have much better key machines. Our key machines are frequently maintained and calibrated for accuracy. That said, copies of copies are often an additional cause of the problem. Locks have small pins that interact with the key. Both the key and the pins wear at different rates over time and that is often why keys become difficult to use. Even before the difficulty is apparent, using a worn or copied key to cut another copy is compounding inaccuracies and will often create a problem. If that is the case, the lock can be repinned either in our shop or we can come to you.

The short answer is yes. If your locks take different types of keys it may involve replacing the cylinder, but either way it can certainly be done.

Please do not try to dislodge the key yourself or inject/insert anything into the lock. The internet is full of terrible solutions to this problem. Most of these solutions either ruin the lock or force the broken piece deeper. We have an extraction tool we can use to safely remove the broken key and make you a new one.
