When exploring electronic and smart lock options for your property, it doesn't take long to realize there's a wide world of products out there. We are going to break down the different features to help you decide which type of lock is right for you. Products from various manufacturers come in a wide variety of options, styles and price points. Once you understand exactly what features you are looking for, it should be a lot easier to narrow the field. Let's take a look at what's out there.
Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi enabled locks are a great way to be proactive about your security. These locks can be controlled and monitored through an app on your smartphone or tablet. When you are connected via Wi-Fi, you can receive alerts when someone attempts to open your door. It is also possible to remotely grant entry at will. Not sure if you remembered to lock up as you left? Now you can check on the status and secure your door right from your phone! With an internet connection, you have 24/7 control and access to the lock's activity feed. Secure your space with just a tap of the app.
Bluetooth
Bluetooth has some similarities to Wi-Fi with some key differences. One advantage of Bluetooth is that you are able to connect to your lock with proximity to your smartphone even when your internet or power is down. When your Bluetooth-enabled device is connected to your lock, the lock will open for you when it detects your approach. The lock can still typically be controlled with an app, though locking and unlocking remotely is not as simple as with a Wi-Fi-enabled lock. Bluetooth often requires some programming ahead of time to lock remotely. The remote lock feature may not be as seamless as with Wi-Fi, but you are typically able to grant a visitor entry by forwarding a temporary code from your app.
Wi-Fi vs. Bluetooth Summary:
There are advantages and disadvantages to both options, but fortunately, there are also many locks out there that offer both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in one lock. A common question about both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth is whether they are vulnerable to hacking. While both are statistically more secure than a standard mechanical key, neither is 100% immune to hacking, just like any other electronic device.
Code Entry

Code entry locks open by entering a pin code on a keypad and often have more than one type of code available. These codes are user-set and edited as needed. They give you the ability to govern who has access to your space and when. From your most basic code entry locks to the most advanced smart locks, you have the ability to grant and revoke permanent or temporary access to your guests.
Temporary Codes: Temporary access codes are available whether or not your keypad lock has Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. User codes can be added or removed at will; the only difference is the method used. If you have Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, access codes can be added, changed, or removed through the app. If you have a short-term rental property, the app allows you to create temporary access codes that correspond to customer bookings. This will ensure your guests have access when they need it, but that access is revoked at the conclusion of their stay. If your lock does not have Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, codes can be manually created and deleted as needed by entering the appropriate programming sequence outlined in your product's programming guide.
Vacation Mode: Some locks offer a vacation mode. Different manufacturers may name this feature differently, but the function is similar from brand to brand. This mode temporarily disables all entry codes until either disabled with an app or manually with the programming code. If you are going away and no one should be stopping by to water the plants, their code won't work until you want it to.
Biometrics
Biometrics can be a great tool to increase the security of your space. Current biometric locks are the fastest and most reliable they've ever been. Some boast fingerprint recognition at 99% accuracy at a speed of under 0.5 seconds without breaking the bank. While nothing is immune to hacking, it is far more difficult to replicate biometric input than it is to deduce or observe an access code or swipe a key from a keyring. It is certainly a more advanced security option; however, there are some factors to consider when deciding whether a biometric lock is right for you. Aging, medical conditions, and injuries can all impact readability, as often our fingerprints become less distinct with advancing age. Certain medical conditions can alter biometric reference points in various ways. When investing in security, it is important to weigh these pros and cons to ensure you are making long-term choices that will work for you.
Design
The aesthetic options in electronic locks have only expanded over time. The color and style options are beginning to rival mechanical locks in sheer variety.
